Comanche Bloodshed | The 1864 SLAUGHTER of Elm Creek
What would it have been like to be with the Comanche on raid? follow the attack in 1864 as a small settlement made vulnerable by the Civil War is descended upon by a large Comanche War Party looking for revenge, resources, and glory.
The Comanche were a warring culture. Raids were an important part of custom and who they were. For centuries young warriors seeking blood rites devastated other Native American tribes as they conquered the plains. Later they attacked the people of New Spain and later Mexico. They caused havoc for Texas and formed a literal barrier to expansion on the plains. Everyone within a few hundred miles of Comancheria was always in danger under the Comanche Moon.
However, a variety of factors contributed to a drop off in Comanche power in the 1850s. Disease, the aggressive nature of the Texas government, and U.S. military action led to a frontier that was fast becoming more pacified. But when the Civil War started, the protection for settlers on the frontier left with the men for war and an outbreak of raids began again against Texas. This is the story of the largest recorded raid during the time period, told from the perspective of the raiders. The Slaughter of Elm Creek in 1864.
This story is different from many others that have been on this channel. One of the difficulties when studying history is sources. This is particularly difficult when studying the history of the Comanche as they didn’t write their history. Because of that, what is written is done from the lens of the Europeans who interacted with them and most of the stories on this channel are done in that way. But this one is different. The sources provide enough information on the events that the rest can be filled in with Comanche custom. As a society that was bound by custom and medicine, we can fairly infer what took place, even in cases where we don’t see the exact events unfold. So this story serves two purposes. We see a Comanche raid from the perspective of the raiders but also see how the culture and custom of the Comanche played out in the attacks.

Comanche Women | More BRUTAL than the Men
Переглядів 256 тис.Місяць тому
”Comanche women defended their lifestyle to its end just as eagerly and ferociously as the men.” ~ T.R. Fehrenbach The women of the Comanche held distinctly different tribal roles than the male warriors. But I would argue that as terrifying as the men were as raiders, the women played an even more brutal role in camp. Historical accounts often treat women as an afterthought. The conflicts that ...

Brutal Killer! Why was he a brutal killer? What was the European then? Never is the European spoken of in this way as history shows they should be for the time.

You mean he fought against the Europeans/Colonizers of North America. You made him sound like a foreigner in his native country. How in the same statement do you say " he was among the final Native Americans forced out of his traditional way of life" then say " He fought the Americans for 25 years as part of the Apache Wars in the southwest." Who are the Americans? Why did you just glaze over that detail it's a key peace that shapes the events of the time that give a full picture of the historical event. Glazing over this paints the picture that Natives are foreigners.

There is a story I heard when I was little about the Apache: A Spaniard road his horse hard for 75 miles until it collapsed. The Spaniard removed his saddle and continued on foot. A Mexican found the horse, got it on its feet, and road it another 50 miles until it collapsed, then continued on foot. A Texan found the horse, got it on its feet, and road it another 40 miles until it collapsed, then continued on foot. An Apache found the horse, and ate it.

In a horrifying attack her home was destroyed etc. etc....................ehm, what did the US government do to ALL American native tribes again ? People taking your land, using your resources etc. Would you expect the natives to take all of it lying down ? No real and clear 'sorry' or anything else to date (what was done was half hearted). It's not an excuse, but it's not 'natives bad' - 'settlers victims'.

What about the Scythians vs Comance. The Scythians were also a nomadic "horse" culture. They are much older then the Mongols. Their culture flourished from around 900 BC to around 200 BC, by which time they had extended their influence all over Central Asia - from China to the northern Black Sea. Unlike other nomadic people they were very talented in metallurgy and their Bronze and gold artifacts are some of the most scophisticated of their time. Though we don't know as much about them as the Mongols or othe namidic cuture, as they are much older. They were also not one single group but a vast complex of different tribal alliances and other units.

I get real tired of hearing all this bullshit about how bad the comanches were. They were punks & lil wannebes compared to the real badasses of the plains. The Lakota tribe. They were the ones who gave the ys army their worst beatdown of anybody on this continent. The reason the comamanches stayed down in texas & oklahoma is cuz if they went north, there would be none of them left to go back south. The only way the comanches won against the texas rangers & such is cuz they always outnumbered their foes.

Given how brutal some of these Amerindian groups were, the US Government was remarkably restrained in their response. The way they teach history in public school is always to paint the Amerindians as innocent victims, but once you have the full context that's not at all the case.

Hi and thanks for the great videos. I’m trying to make up for lost time learning all I can about my descendants while I still can. Quanah is my great great grandfather. I’m from the Choney line of wives and Baldwin is my great grandfather. His son Simmons is my grandpa. My father is white while my mom is full blooded Indian but half Kiowa and half Comanche. To be honest I never cared about my Indian heritage growing up. Being half white me and my brothers were teased by our cousins which made me cold hearted to my native side for many years. Only in the last few years have I really became fascinated with it all. Learning the established history while often getting a completely different version when I ask old Comanches about the same events. A good example is Nocona’s death. There is the historical version then there is the Comanche version and they differ quite a bit. I’m still not sure which one if either is right tbh. Anyways just wanted to say ty again. My mom is the sweetest (& shortest barely 5’) little old Indian lady in the world so it is fascinat g to think she is just a generation or two away from being a total savage. 😉

This reminds me of the Wendigo stories. Maybe the Tonkawa became a tribe of Wendigo and so the Comanche felt it was their duty to wipe them out? As you said, makes no sense they were allowed to practice their cannibalism before and then suddenly it was no longer tolerated.
